The Lost Ways Review
get away from the metropolitan environment and realize a setting that more closely matches the bug out scenario locations which we may be heading to should a disaster strike. It never hurts us, despite of how well prepared we may think we are to practice our survival skills. It allows us to flee our ordinary routine and spend some worthy time honing up on our skills that we have learned over the years.

As Americans we are very fortunate to have before us millions of public acres of lands readily available for our enjoyment whether that is for recreational or research purposes. The primary caretaker for this public land remains in the hands of the Forest Service. All of our national owned forest land is open for public camping unless posted otherwise. Since these lands are so huge and vast they provides the survivalist with a peaceful and solitude location to see what they have learned.

If you decide to venture and use dispersed camping as a means of testing your preparedness keep certain rules clearly in mind. The first is that you will need a fire permit. This is a number one rule of the Forest Department personnel. Another is that you will find it necessary to carry your own water into your camp location or you will be required to purify the local water obtained from the lakes or streams. You must setup your retreat at least 100 feet from any water source. Since you will find no type of toilet facilities in the wild it will be your responsibility to dig a six inch deep hole in which to disposal of your waste. Remember as we have discussed in a previous article use the leave no trace rule. Keep it clean for who knows we may have to live there for a spell.

Our country has many varied types of settings where you can setup camp and test your skills ranging from the high country areas as found in Arizona's National Forests to locations that provide you with canyon vistas or unbelievably beautiful sunsets. Nowhere else can you experience the wondrous smell of ponderosa pine or juniper trees while awaking to the fresh sound of birds and the scamper of the various forest creatures. With no smog you are afforded the opportunity to see a clear night sky view of the Milky Way as you have never seen before.
